The job

What does a legal operations manager do?

A legal operations manager runs the legal department as a business: the budget, the outside counsel, the processes and the technology. More and more, that means AI: choosing the tools, setting the rules for their use, measuring what they save and making sure the lawyers check what comes out.

The role sits between the lawyers, finance, IT and procurement. It needs no law degree. It needs someone who understands how legal work flows and how to make it faster without making it riskier.

Questions

Questions about the Legal operations manager role

Do I need a law degree?

No. Legal operations managers come from paralegal work, project management, finance and IT as often as from law. What matters is knowing how legal work flows and how to improve it.

Is this an AI job?

More every year. Choosing, testing and monitoring AI tools now sits with legal operations in most departments that use them, and so does the question of whether the lawyers check the output.

Why the CIPM?

Running legal operations is running a programme: owners, processes, metrics and reports. The CIPM teaches that discipline, with the privacy questions every legal tool raises.

Where does the role sit?

Usually reporting to the general counsel, sometimes to the chief operating officer. In law firms it often sits in an innovation or operations team.
